Michelle Duggar upsets gay and transgender community with controversial political quote, resulting in a petition to have her show cancelled.
The conservative Christian values of the Duggar family helped turn 19 Kids and Counting into one of TLC’s top-rated reality shows, but after star Michelle Duggar used her influence to promote gay “fear-mongering,” over 100,000 people called for the show’s cancellation.
A recent ordinance in Fayetteville, Arkansas sought to protect members of the gay and transgender community from discrimination by businesses. In a robocall message aimed to turn people against the ordinance, Michelle can be heard openly stating her belief that predatory men may choose to become women simply so they can prey on women.
“I don’t believe the citizens of Fayetteville would want males with past child predator convictions that claim they are female to have a legal right to enter private areas that are reserved for women and girls,” said the mother of 19.
Her robocall message caused Jim Wissick to create a Change.org petition to encourage TLC to cancel 19 Kids and Counting, where he stated that Duggar’s words “reek of ignorance and fear mongering.”
“Just because someone is transgendered doesn’t mean they are a child predator or a rapist,” Wissick wrote on the petition’s website. “The claim that this ordinance would provide predators with access to women’s restrooms in order to assault or leer at girls or women is nothing more than fear-mongering and spreading ignorance and hatred.”
“Duggars have thrown massive amounts of money to repeal this law so business owners and landlords can evict and fire people solely over gender identity and sexual orientation! They need to be taken off the air!”
Within days, over 100,000 people signed the petition and it continues to gain supporters. Also, despite Michelle Duggar’s attempts to encourage people to vote against the ordinance, it passed this week.
TLC has not yet addressed the petition, but the Duggar family subtly addressed it in a recent Facebook post on their official reality fanpage by quoting the scripture Luke 6:27.
“But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you,” the family wrote, before continuing, “tis such a sweet scripture that we hold dear. We will always stand for truth and the values we hold dear without compromise but we will do so in love and kindness–treating others well even if we don’t agree with them and we will do so without hateful words. This verse is a reminder of how we must always carry ourselves. Precious words from Jesus.”
