Barbie is proportionally five inches taller than the average 19-year-old and her waist is her waist is almost 16 inches narrower.
Lammily is a new doll available just in time for the holidays, but she is no ordinary fashion doll. Lammily is designed using standard human body proportions, emphasizing the motto that average is beautiful.
According to Time, Lammily started as an art project in July 2013. The artist, Nickolay Lamm, was inundated with requests for one of his dolls. So, in March 2014, he launched a crowdfunding campaign to manufacture the doll. With over 13,000 backers preordering 19,000 dolls, Lammily became a commercial reality.
The doll is available now and accessories will be out in January. In addition to several outfits, Lammily also sells Lammily Marks as an accessory. These are clear vinyl stickers of imperfections that are normally found on humans, including freckles, acne, cellulite, and injuries. They are repositionable and reusable.
In contrast with Barbie, Lammily has the measurements of an average 19-year-old woman’s body. These measurements are based on those calculated by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If Barbie were human, she would not even be able to walk upright because her feet are too small. She would also only have room for half a liver.
The unrealistic and impractical body image that Barbie portrays inspired Lamm’s work. He asked himself what fashion dolls would look like if they used realistic proportions. According to Business Insider, some of the noticeable differences are height and waist. Barbie is proportionally five inches taller than the average 19-year-old and her waist is her waist is almost 16 inches narrower. The prototype was created on a 3-D printer, but now the Lammily makes it possible to own a beautiful, but realistic doll.
