Bill Cosby’s appearance on Letterman cancelled

More fallout from the latest allegations.

Bill Cosby’s upcoming appearance on CBS’s “Late Show with David Letterman” has been cancelled in the midst of a flurry of accusations that the comedian has sexually assaulted multiple women in past decades. His spokesman, David Brokaw, confirmed the cancellation but declined to comment.

This follows on the heels of another Cosby scheduling cancellation on The Queen Latifah show on October 30, which was apparently at Cosby’s request.

So far five women have publicly come forward and alleged that Cosby had assaulted them in the past. Cosby has never been criminally charged in the cases, but settled a civil suit in 2006 with a woman named Andrea Constand who alleged he had sexually assaulted her two years before. She was joined in the suit by thirteen other women who told similar stories.

One of Cosby’s accusers, a 46-year old artist named Barbara Bowman, has stated that Cosby “brainwashed me into viewing him as a father figure, and then assaulted me multiple times” when she was a 17-year old aspiring actress and had come into contact with Cosby in 1985 in what she initially believed would be a professional connection.

Bowman cited the fear that nobody would believe that “America’s dad” could do something so morally bankrupt as a reason why she is only coming out now with her story. In one instance, a teenage Bowman allegedly tried to tell a lawyer that she met with at the behest of a friend and “he laughed me out of the office. He thought it was absolutely preposterous…”

Cosby, 77, has declined to comment on the sexual assault allegations directed at him in all public appearances thus far, sometimes merely staying silent and shaking his head when the subject is brought up.

NBC and Netflix have cancelled upcoming projects that Cosby was going to be involved in, although these companies too are staying mum. Eric Deggans from NPR tweeted on Wednesday: “NBC on prospective Bill Cosby show: “We can confirm that the Cosby project is no longer in development. No comment from the network.”
