Bono expected to make a full recovery, but will need "intensive and progressive therapy" before he can perform again.
U2 frontman Bono was involved in a bicycle accident in New York’s Central Park on Sunday, forcing the group to cancel week-long residency on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. While he is expected to make a full recovery, Bono was forced to undergo “intensive therapy” which involved getting three metal plates and 18 screws inserted into his elbow.
Bono’s bicycle accident left him with a fractured face and shoulder blade, and his left humerus bone was reportedly ”driven though his skin” and split into six pieces. He was rushed to the New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center’s Emergency Department, and doctors put him through multiple X-rays and CAT scans before operating on the 54-year-old.
”He was taken emergently to the operating room for a five-hour surgery Sunday evening where the elbow was washed out and debrided, a nerve trapped in the break was moved and the bone was repaired with three metal plates and 18 screws,” orthopedic trauma surgeon Dean Lorich told Rolling Stone. “One day later, he had surgery to his left hand to repair a fracture of his fifth metacarpal.”
While Bono requires “intensive and progressive therapy,” Lorich reassured U2 fans by revealing that “a full recovery is expected.”
U2 released a statement on their website Wednesday to apologize to fans for having to cancel their The Tonight Show appearances and thank Jimmy Fallon for being so cooperative and supportive throughout the unfortunate ordeal.
“It looks like we will have to do our ‘Tonight Show’ residency another time – we’re one man down. Bono has injured his arm in a cycling spill in Central Park and requires some surgery to repair it. We’re sure he’ll make a full recovery soon, so we’ll be back! Much thanks to Jimmy Fallon and everyone at the show for their understanding.”
