His wife, who was with him, was hospitalized for trauma.
A man has been charged with murder after police say he shoved a Bronx man in front of a train on a subway platform, killing him.
Kevin Darden, 34, was arrested by New York police on Tuesday after 61-year-old Wai Kuen Kwok was shoved into the path of a subway train on Sunday Morning, according to CNN.
Kwok was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife was with him, and she was hospitalized for trauma but did not face physical injuries.
The suspect fled the station after the shove. Police did not say whether they believed there had been an altercation between Kwok and Darden.
The incident happened at 8:45 a.m. as the couple left their Bronx apartment for Chinatown and breakfast together. His wife screamed “push, push!” using the few English words she knew, according to a New York Times report.
The man who pushed Kwok didn’t take anything, and there is a high probability the two men didn’t have an altercation earlier. Instead, investigators say that the attack could have been a random, purposeful shove of an individual in front of a subway train.
So far this year, 49 people have been killed by subway trains, but most of them were either suicides or accidental falls. This killing is the first since 2012 that was deliberately caused by someone else.
The last time such an incident occurred was in December 2012 when a woman shoved a man in front of a train in Queens, killing him. The woman was charged with murder, which was classified as a hate crime as the man was an Indian immigrant.
