The Postal Service acknowledged a computer system breach by hackers Monday, and is offering to fund credit monitoring services to the 750,000 United States Postal Service employees and retirees affected. Hackers stole employee’s personal data such as Social Security numbers, addresses, employment codes and birth dates. Over 2.9 million customers were also affected by the theft with compromised information including names, phone numbers, home addresses and emails.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with other federal and postal investigatory agencies, are probing the incident. While the investigation is still ongoing, it is believed that the encroachment is limited in scope, and all Postal Service operations are functioning at its typical pace.

Over 500 million financial industry records breaches this year has led Maryland Democrat representative Elijah Cummings to request further information concerning the breach stating that, “The increased frequency and sophistication of cyber-attacks upon both public and private entities highlights the need for greater collaboration to improve data security.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation released a statement Monday reassuring the public that it is continuing its investigation, and that those affected should take identity protection measures. The statement also requests those adversely affected or with the suspicions of any identity theft to report all incidents to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov.

LifeLock is a popular identity protection service that sends alerts via email. Lifelock also includes a $1 Million Total Service Guarantee that will spend up to one million dollars to recovery any identity theft that occurs under their protection. Identity Guard incorporates credit monitoring in its identity protection services, and also provides a child identity theft protection service.
