HBO acquires drama based on 1973 Michael Crichton film ‘Westworld’

Upcoming series will star an impressive cast, led by Anthony Hopkins.

With True Blood over and the final seasons of Boardwalk Empire and The Newsroom being nearly wrapped, HBO has been desperately searching for a new drama to air alongside their hit shows Game of Thrones, The Leftovers, True Detective and Utopia. The network announcement on Twitter on Monday that they’ve officially acquired the rights for a drama based on Michael Crichton’s 1973 film Westworld, which will premiere sometime in 2015.

The series will star Anthony Hopkins in his first series-regular role. Hopkins will portray an inventor who runs an adult amusement park populated by lifelike robots played by James Marsden, Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, and a number of other talented actors. Sources have told The Hollywood Reporter that the robots of Westworld can be killed off and return with completely different personas, which will allow these actors to play many characters and thus sign multiyear deals with the show.

“This is built as a series and, in terms of storytelling, I think the rules are definitely being broken,” said HBO programming president Michael Lombardo. “The promise of the show, in terms of where it’s going, is exciting to actors, and they want to be a part of this.”

Written by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the drama will come from J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk’s Bad Robot Productions and have the duo executive producing the series alongside Jerry Weintraub, Nolan and Joy.

Westworld will be HBO’s second drama from Warner Bros. Television, and their first project with Bad Robot. The banner has seen success with CBS’ Person of Interest and will soon air their event series 11/22/63 on Hulu, but recently suffered from the failures of Revolution, Almost Human and Believe.

Bad Robot is also working on a miniseries based on Rod Serling’s final and unproduced screenplay, The Stops Along the Way, but a network is not yet attached to the project.
