They were returning home from a cheerleading event in Washington, D.C.
Fifteen people were sent to the hospital due to fumes from a charter bus carrying cheerleaders in Virginia, according to a local TV station report.
Dispatchers received a 911 call just before 6:50 p.m. Sunday night that people on the bus were having difficulty breathing due to fumes. The bus had pulled over off Interstate 95 in Thornburg in Spotsylvania County and was at a gas station on Mudd Tavern Road.
The bus had stopped after a child fell ill in the bus, and was in the bathroom with another woman who was also sick, according to a gas station employee quoted in the report.
People were reporting that they couldn’t breathe inside the bus, forcing all of them to come out. Shortly after, five or six ambulances arrived to treat the sick.
The Spotsylvania Volunteer Fire Department stated in an 8 p.m. Facebook post that there were 11 patients at the time and the sickening may have to do with carbon monoxide poisoning.
The bus was filled with cheerleaders who had been competing at a Washington, D.C. event and were on their way back to North Carolina.
A total of 10 victims were sent to Mary Washington Hospital, and five went to Spotsylvania Regional Hospital.
