The boy's mother died after an emergency C-section 24 weeks into the pregnancy.
Video of a California father’s heartbroken song to his dying infant son shortly after the boy’s mother died as well has captivated the nation.
The video shows Chris Picco playing the song “Blackbird” by the Beatles and singing the lyrics “Blackbird fly, into the light of the dark black night/You were only waiting for this moment to arise” to his infant son lying down covered in tubes, according to ABC News.
His wife, Ashley Picco, had to have an emergency C-section at 24 weeks on Nov. 8 for Lennon James Picco, whose name was inspired by the Beatles songwriter. Picco died from the event, and Lennon suffered from oxygen deprivation.
Ashley had told her husband that the baby would move when he played music, and Chris had hoped to pass on the gift of music to his new son. It was music that was Chris Picco’s only solace as he listened to the mechanical noises of the incubator.
“So I thought I’m going to get my guitar,” said Picco, who is from Loma Linda, to a local TV station. “Ashley would want me to sing to my son and play to my son.”
Lennon died three days after the birth in an outfit decorated with miniature guitars. One of Picco’s friends uploaded the clip, which went viral and currently has more than 5 million views.
A memorial service will be held for Ashley Picco and the baby this weekend. Chris Picco wrote in a Facebook post that he was “thankful for the four unforgettable days I got to spend with him,” and that this mother would have been “beyond joy to see him and to hold him.”
