‘Dumb and Dumber To’ defeats ‘Interstellar’ for box office lead

Observers expect the film to take in $35 million this weekend.

When it comes to the box office, a lot of stupidity goes a long way — true to that, “Dumb and Dumber To” has taken first place on Friday with an opening-day total of $14.2 million.

The sequel, which comes 20 years after the original classic starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, has so far performed poorly among critics — generating just a 36 rating out of 100 on Metacritic after 30 reviews — but that hasn’t dissuaded moviegoers to flock to theaters, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Observers expect the film to take in $35 million this weekend. “Dumb and Dumber” grossed $127 million back in 1994.

The movie’s rise has bumped the Christopher Nolan thriller “Interstellar” to second place after bringing in $8.3 million on Friday in its second week. Meanwhile, “Big Hero 6” — Disney’s newest big release — continued to post strong returns with $8 million on Friday, bringing its total haul to $83.7 million in just eight days. The movie is also expected to reach $35 million this weekend.

In “Dumb and Dumber To,” Carrey and Daniels reprise teir roles as Harry Dunne and Lloyd Christmas.

At the start of the film, Harry has started going to a mental hospital to visit Lloyd, who was committed ever since his romance with Mary Swanson failed in the last film 20 years ago.

The film was made by the Farrelly brothers — Peter and Bobby — and the original received mixed reviews from critics when it was released in 1994. However, it was a commercial success that developed a cult following that launched the Farrelly brothers and solidified Carrey’s standing as a major film star.

Following their breakout success with Dumb and Dumber, the Farrelly brothers created and directed more comedic hits, including “Kingpin,” “There’s Something About Mary,” “Me Myself & Irene,” “Shallow Hal,” “Stuck on You,” and “Fever Pitch.”
