Second ’50 Shades of Grey’ trailer seems more romantic comedy than BDSM film

Fans and critics frustrated that the second trailer for the upcoming film adaptation of EL. James' controversial best-seller seems as tame as the first.

The first trailer for 50 Shades of Grey released in June to mixed reception, and when the 15-second “teaser” for the second trailer released last week, fans voiced their opinion that it left much to be desired. The second trailer was officially released on Thursday night, and while viewers were treated to some visuals of Christan Grey’s shirtless torso and a look at the series’ Red Room of Pain, critics are noting that the film so far seems a lot more romantic comedy than E.L. James’ novel.

In the two-and-a-half minute trailer for Sam Taylor-Johnson’s movie adaptation of the bestselling trilogy,  which premiered Thursday night on ABC’s Scandal, Anastasia and Christian are seen falling in love and dancing together, set to synthed-up strains of Beyonce’s “Haunted.”

Many are questioning the decision to include romantic scenes like Grey taking his new girlfriend on a plane ride and bringing her to meet his family to dinner, but the trailer at least gives viewers their first glimpse inside the series’ iconic Red Room of Pain. Despite the rom-com nature of the trailer, there are also a few blindfolds and some duct tape to assure fans that Taylor-Johnson tried to stay true to the controversial source material.

“He was really smart, really intense,” said Dakota Johnson’s Anastasia Steele of Jamie Dornan’s BDSM sex-addict.

“I exercise control in all things. My tastes are very…singular,” says Dornan in an appropriately sexual and mysterious voice, repeating the infamous line featured in the film’s first trailer. “You wouldn’t understand.”

“Enlighten me, then,” responds the film’s narrator suggestively.

Dornan raised the eyebrows of book-lovers and critics alike this week when he stated that the film will not have “gratuitous sex scenes” and that he would not be appearing nude. The film is set for release next Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 2015.
