A new movie will star a big star.
Australian actress Margot Robbie is confirmed to have been cast in the role of Harley Quinn in the supervillain movie Suicide Squad, which is slated for release in August 2016. Robbie, 24, will portray the villain of Batman franchise fame, notable as The Joker’s on-again, off-again lover.
Suicide Squad, written and directed by Fury filmmaker David Ayer, follows the plot of Gotham City’s most treacherous villains as they take on dangerous, government-backed black ops missions in exchange for a reduction of their jail sentences.
The character of Harley Quinn began as Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel, a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum, who abandons her life as an ordinary citizen to join the criminal underground of Gotham City.
Jared Leto is rumored to be in discussions for the role of The Joker. There is also speculation that actors Will Smith, Tom Hardy and Ryan Gosling, among others, are taking on leading roles.
Suicide Squad falls into a long list of Warner Bros movies based on storylines from subsidiary company DC Comics, and the trend shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. Between now and 2020, Warner Bros plans to release ten superhero and supervillain epics based on characters from the DC Comics universe.
Robbie is most well-known as Jordan Belfort’s wife Naomi inThe Wolf of Wall Street, and her current film project is Warner Bros’ Tarzan, cast as the role of Jane.
