Another officer returned fire on the suspect, but it is not known if the suspect was hit.
Colorado police called off a manhunt for a suspect who shot an Aurora police officer Friday night after he fled on foot.
Although police searched far and wide for the suspect after shooting Friday night, which happened during a traffic stop, they didn’t know which direction he fled from his stolen car two blocks from the shooting. As a result, the search was called off early this morning, according to USA Today.
Police don’t have a description of the suspect. The officer was taken to a nearby hospital for surgery, but the Aurora Police Department had no details on his condition.
Police say several shots were fired during the stop, and the injured officer was part of a two-person unit. The non-injured officer fired at the suspect, and it is unclear whether was anyone hit by the returning fire.
The vehicle was stopped at about 9 p.m. The manhunt was called off at 1:45 a.m., but police were still seeking witnesses and securing the crime scene.
Aurora is the site of an infamous mass shooting in 2012, when a gunman entered a midnight screening of the movie “The Dark Knight Rises” and fired on the audience, killing 12 and injuring 70 people — the deadliest shooting in Colorado since the Columbia High School massacre in 1999.
Aurora, which has a population of about 325,000, is considered part of the Denver metropolitan area and lies just east of the city proper.
