After an unidentified submarine entered Swedish waters without authorization, the nation's military is pooling its resources to determine how this violation occurred.
In October, Sweden experienced a major security breach when an unidentified objectt entered Swedish waters. Later the unidentified object was deemed to be a submarine but Swedish officials could not determine the nationality of the submarine, posing a major security threat. As time has passed, Sweden is close to uncovering what exactly happened to allow this vessel to breach their boundaries without authorization.
Swedish armed forces began an investigation into the nature of the vessel in an effort to figure out what country the submarine came from, how it was able to enter Swedish waters undetected, and why Sweden was not able to pick up on the mystery vessel sooner.
Today, General Sverker Goranson said that this breach of national security and threat to Swedish sovereignty will not be tolerated in a statement to the people of Sweden along with the rest of the international community.
The investigation has uncovered some facts in the initial stages, but nothing definitive has been concluded. The military attained intelligence of an emergency call made in Russian that corresponds within a similar timeframe, on the same date, and at a similar location to where the mystery vessel was spotted. Russian officials have denied any involvement in the situation, claiming that they have been respectful of international diplomacy and geographic boundaries.
Prime Minister Stefan Lofven plans to heighten awareness of illegal activity in Swedish waters and has vowed to strengthen the nation’s Navy program to ensure quicker detection and response for future incidents.
While the Swedish military has kept relatively quiet during the investigation and has not let much detail surface, they have asserted that civilian assistance was key in gathering the intel they have at this point in the investigation.
