Rapper Big Bank Hank of the Sugarhill Gang dies at age 57

The rap pioneer, best known for the breakout hit Rapper's Delight, died this week of complications from cancer.

The rap world is mourning the loss of a legend. Big Bank Hank of the pioneering group Sugarhill Gang died Tuesday at the age of 57.

CNN reports that Hank, whose real name was Henry Jackson, died in New Jersey from complications of cancer. The news was confirmed by David Mallie, who manages the remaining members of Sugarhill Gang, “Wonder Mike” Wright and Guy “MasterGee” O’Brien. Wright and O’Brien issued a statement on Tuesday, writing, “So sad to hear about our brother’s passing. The 3 of us created musical history together with the release of Rapper’s Delight. We will always remember traveling the world together and rocking the house. Rest in peace Big Bank.”

Hank, Wright, and O’Brien were all unknown when they were put together by late record executive Sylvia Robinson. Their most famous song, “Rapper’s Delight,” was released in 1979, and despite having a running length of almost 14 minutes in some versions, reached the Top 40 on Billboard charts and was a must-play in dance clubs.

In their report of his passing, the LA Times reports Hank started as a bouncer but became “rap-funk personified.” “Rapper’s Delight”’s success was somewhat marred by litigation about the song’s unauthorized samples of Chic’s “Good Times” and was a one-hit wonder that did not lead to much wealth for its members. However, the LA Times claims Big Bank Hank’s legacy can be felt in almost any rap song since their big hit.

No funeral or memorial plans for Hank have been announced.
