‘Evil Dead’ series to premiere on Starz next year: ‘Ash is back’

Cult-classic horror franchise will spawn a Starz series set 30 years after the original film.

The low-budget 1981 horror film The Evil Dead helped launch the careers of director Sam Raimi, producer Rob Tapert and actor Bruce Campbell, and now the trio will be reuniting to bring life back to the cult-classic franchise. Raimi confirmed Monday that an Ash vs. Evil Dead series will premiere on Starz in 2015.

The Evil Dead never had a big theatrical release, so very few people saw the film in theaters in 1981. However, after horror fans discovered the film when it was released on VHS and DVD, it became a near-instant cult-classic, and still serves as an example of the sort of high-level scares and brilliant camera work that can be found in a low-budget horror film.

The original film spawned a number of sequels and received a reboot in 2013, which Raimi, Tapert and Campbell produced. The trio will once again reunite as executive producers for the upcoming series, and Campbell will reprise his role of Ash, the protagonist of the original Evil Dead films, who has a chainsaw for an arm. In the Starz series, Ash is 30 years older than when fans were first introduced to his character, and is being described as “an aging lothario who’s forced to face demons, metaphorical and literal.” Raimi plans to direct the pilot, which he co-wrote with his brother, Ivan Raimi, and Tom Spezialy.

“Evil Dead has always been a blast. Bruce, Rob, and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to tell the next chapter in Ash’s lame, but heroic saga,” said Raimi in a statement. “With his chainsaw arm and his ‘boomstick,’ Ash is back to kick some monster butt. And brother, this time there’s a truckload of it.”

The trio of Raimi, Tapert and Campbell acquired the extremely modest funds for the original The Evil Dead film with help from metro Detroit investors and inexpensive local actors, but the Starz series will likely have a lot more money to work with. Raimi has confirmed that the series will premiere sometime next year.
