A former World of Warcraft Game Director is leading development
Late last week at Blizzcon, Blizzard Entertainment – the developer of the smash hit World of Warcraft – announced the launch of a new sci-fi PC-game franchise, Overwatch. Jeff Kaplan – a former World of Warcraft Game Director – will be leading the Overwatch development team, Gamespot reports.
Blizzard is touting Overwatch as a “pick up and play” multiplayer first person shooter (FPS).
“In a time of global crisis, an international task force of soldiers, scientists, adventurers, and oddities known as Overwatch had come together to restore peace to a war-torn world,” the company describes the game on its website. “After many years, the group’s influence waned, and it was eventually disbanded. Overwatch might be gone now…but the world still needs heroes.”
According to Gamespot, Overwatch matches will pit six players against each other on a variety of terrains of a futuristic Earth, including London and Egypt.
The hype surrounding the game’s 2015 release is massive, and early reviews are positive.
“At first I wasn’t impressed, but then I discovered how interesting its characters are,” writes Nathan Grayson on the game-reviewing site Kotaku. “Overwatch exudes an effusive charm.”
The challenge for Overwatch will be in living up to the enormously high expectations set by the success of World of Warcraft.
“With every new Blizzard game, we look at our favorite aspects of a genre and put our own spin on things,” Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime said in a statement. “Our goal with Overwatch is to create an awesome FPS experience that’s more accessible to a much wider audience while delivering the action and depth that shooter fans love.”
