"He knew we were there to kill him."
Osama bin Laden “died afraid” in the 2011 Seal Team Six raid on his compound in Pakistan, according to the former Navy Seal claiming to be the shooter.
In a controversial decision, Rob O’Neill revealed himself to be the shooter of bin Laden, and said he does not care if people don’t believe him, according to CNN.
O’Neill, who is 38, said that bin Laden died scared, and “he knew we were there to kill him.” Seal Team Six raided the compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, in a daring early morning raid by helicopter. O’Neill said he killed bin Laden with two point-blank sots to the head, although other Seals and military sources dispute that account.
O’Neill said he came across bin Laden standing in a room with his hands on a woman’s shoulders pushing her ahead of him, and that he then shot him twice in the forehead.
However, another Seal who came forward, Matt Bissonette, said in his book No Easy Day that the point man shot bin Laden in the head from the bottom of the stairs, and then he and a teammate shot him in the chest.
Anonymous military sources said that it was the point man who killed bin Laden, and O’Neill and Bissonette simply shot an already mortally wounded bin Laden.
In addition to killing bin Laden in the raid, Seal Team Six also killed his two bodyguards, one of his sons, and the wife of a bodyguard. Two women were also wounded in the attack.
O’Neill currently works as a motivational speaker ever since leaving the Navy. Pentagon officials have criticized the decision to come forward.
The leaders of the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Command wrote a public letter to current and former Seals saying that the move was a “selfish disregard for our core values in return for public notoriety and financial gain, which only diminishes otherwise honorable service, courage and sacrifice.”
Pentagon officials have also suggested they may take legal action against O’Neill for allegedly releasing classified information.
