The social media network is now adding a News Feed settings page that will take the awkward out of unfriending and make it easier for users to customize what they do or do not see in their feeds.
Tired of a person’s nonsense on Facebook, but don’t want to actually unfriend them? Facebook has long allowed users to unfollow people without completely deleting those people from friends lists. However, according to a recent report from TIME, the social media network is now adding a News Feed settings page that will make it easier for users to customize what they do or do not see in their feeds.
The new page will be helpful to users for a variety of reasons. For one thing, it will allow people to see which friends or pages they engage or interact with on a most regular basis. For another, it will give users a place to see and manage the friends they have unfollowed recently.
Overall, “management” is the keyword for the News Feed settings page. It will essentially give Facebook users much more power in customizing their news feeds, so that they get more of the things they want to see, and less of the irrelevant crap. With this new settings page, the news feed could potentially become a place to find interesting stories, friend posts. Of course, such has always been the goal of the news feed, but it has become muddied in recent years thanks to over-sharers and a preponderance of clickbait articles.
Speaking of clickbait, Facebook vowed to clean up news feeds of this social media junk mail back in August. It is possible that the upcoming News Feed settings page could help play into that mission. This year especially, Facebook has been flooded with Buzzfeed-wannabe-type list articles, or by hyperbolic headlines like “you won’t believe what happens next!” By waging war against this poor content, Facebook could help to improve user experiences across its social network platform.
