The famed video game developer behind World of Warcraft announces a new futuristic game.
Blizzard Entertainment is wowing gamers worldwide with Overwatch, the studio’s debut in the first-person shooter game category. The new video game will carry over some features from MMO Titan, which Blizzard previously canceled, along with all-new settings such as London and an Egyptian bazaar.
The studio most known for fantasy game World of Warcraft is pushing into the first-person shooter with a title that is set in a “science-fiction” Earth with “a selection of characters covering different genders, classes, abilities and nationalities such as a teleporting English pilot, a tank-like German soldier, an acrobatic Japanese mercenary and an Indian architect able to shield her allies,” according to the UK Telegraph.
There will be a dozen characters in total with players competing in teams of six, able to combine their character’s powers. Overwatch is drawing early comparisons to Valve’s Team Fortress 2, the Telegraph’s Video Games Editor Tom Hoggins writes, as it combines “with Blizzard’s talent for fantasy world-building.
“With every new Blizzard game, we look at our favorite aspects of a genre and put our own spin on things,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment. “Our goal with Overwatch is to create an awesome FPS experience that’s more accessible to a much wider audience while delivering the action and depth that shooter fans love.”
BlizzCon attendees will get to test out Overwatch first before beta testing begins next year. To sign up, visit www.playoverwatch.com.
