Jerry Seinfeld may be autistic: ‘Basic social engagement is really a struggle’

ASD is a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders.

Jerry Seinfeld, famous for Seinfeld and most recently Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee, believes he’s on the autism spectrum.

“On a very drawn-out scale, I think I’m on the spectrum,” Seinfeld told NBC’s Brian Williams Thursday.

Williams then asked Jerry why he thinks he’s on the autism spectrum.

“Basic social engagement is really a struggle. I’m very literal, when people talk to me and they use expressions, sometimes I don’t know what they’re saying,” Seinfeld said. “But I don’t see it as dysfunctional. I just think of it as an alternate mindset.”

MTV.com reports that Seinfeld has long been a supporter of fundraising efforts for autism, making, for example, an appearance at 2012’s “Night of Too Many Stars.”

According to the National Institutes of Health, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders, characterized by social impairments, communication troubles, and restricted, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior.

What do you think of Jerry’s admission that he may be on the autism spectrum? Does this help autism advocates? Sound off in the comments section.
