The update is very much aimed at making Google Maps a more visually appealing application.
Ever felt like the Google Maps mobile application wasn’t flashy enough? You’re in luck.
According to a new report from Tech Times, Google has given the Maps application a makeover, and users should start seeing the results within the next week or so. The update is very much aimed at making Google Maps a more visually appealing application, which means that there probably will not be a whole host of new features on the way.
Still, the new aesthetic flourishes sound interesting. Evelyn Kim, a Google Maps designer, wrote a blog post about the update. She said that the update would feature “bold colors and textures,” as well as dynamic “surfaces and shadows” and “layers and buttons [that] come to life so you know just where to touch to get directions, recommendations, and imagery.”
All of that will probably make more sense when we actually have the new version of Maps in our hands. However, from the sound of it, the new version of the program is going to make a conscious effort to make its maps look more like a reflection the real world.
The visual updates to Google Maps are not being made “just for kicks.” A new iteration of Android (called Lollipop) is on the way, and with the update, Google is rolling out a new design language. To suit the new language, the company is making updates to all of its mobile apps.
Google is also working on integrating third-party services into the Google Maps platform. For instance, Google Maps is working with OpenTable – an app meant for making restaurant reservations – to make it easier for users to find food spots with available tables. Integration is also now available with Uber, allowing users to check for ride pickup times and prices, right from the Google Maps application.
