‘Toy Story 4’ officially scheduled for 2017 release

Pixar chief John Lasseter to helm fourth 'Toy Story' film.

Pixar chief John Lasseter’s innovative use of computer technology in the first Toy Story set the bar for animated films for decades to come, and Walt Disney CEO Robert Iger announced Thursday that Lasseter will return to direct Toy Story 4.

The story for the film was conceived, by Lasseter, Finding Nemo‘s Andrew Stanton, Up and Monsters Inc.‘s Pete Docter, and Toy Story 3‘s Lee Unkrich. Rashida Jones and her writing partner Will McCormack will pen the screenplay.

When Iger revealed the news during a quarterly earnings call for investors, he sadly did not confirm whether Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, or any of the franchise’s other primary voice actors will be returning, but it is highly unlikely a fourth Toy Story film would be made without them.

Fans have often praised Toy Story 3 for being the perfect ending to the series, so Lasseter released a statement Thursday to assure fans that his upcoming film won’t damage the sense of closure they felt at the end of the most recent film.

“We love these characters so much, they are like family to us. We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before,” said Lasseter. “[Toy Story 3] ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another Toy Story movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie — and I wanted to direct it myself.”

“A lot of people in the industry view us doing sequels as being for the business of it, but for us it’s pure passion. We only make sequels when we have a story that’s as good as or better than the original.”

The film is set to hit theaters in June 16, 2017.
