Lionsgate announces live ‘Hunger Games’ theater production

Live stage adaptation of Suzanne Collins' 'Hunger Games' is in the works.

Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy has sold over 80 million copies and, so far, the films based on the series have grossed more than $1.5 billion worldwide. Lionsgate have proved that they are willing to milk the franchise for all its worth when they split the third book in the series into two films, and now the film studio has announced that they will be teaming up with Dutch media company Imagine Nation and U.S.-based Triangular Entertainment to create a live Hunger Games theater production. The stage is tentatively scheduled for 2016.

In order to properly capture Katniss Everdeen’s epic journey of survival, Lionsgate, Imagine Nation and Triangular Entertainment plan to use “innovative and immersive staging techniques” in the live show. It will be produced by award-winning Broadway producer Robin de Levita, and will launch in a new purpose-built theater constructed next to London’s Wembley Stadium.

“Robin de Levita and the entire production team are the perfect partners for extending ‘The Hunger Games franchise into a live theatrical experience,” said Lionsgate Chief Marketing Officer Tim Palen in a statement on Friday. “Their creative genius, combined with world-class production values and state-of-the-art technology will provide a uniquely immersive experience for fans around the world.”

De Levita has experience working with “innovative” staging techniques, as two of her most recent productions – the Dutch musical “Soldier of Orange” and “The Diary of the Anne Frank” – used rotating stage sets.

“I’m thrilled to be partnering with an innovative next generation studio like Lionsgate on a property that resonates so deeply with global audiences,” said De Levita. “The theater is a fantastic medium to bring the many meaningful layers of Suzanne Collins’ writing for life.”

Lionsgate has not yet revealed the potential premiere date for the Hunger Games stage show, but the first part of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay opens in theaters on Nov. 21.
