Knightley wanted people to see what she really looks like.
Keira Knightley, known for her role in Pirates of the Caribbean, says that her recent decision to go topless in a photoshoot for Interview magazine was a statement against Photoshopped images in the media, which have been slammed for marketing an unrealistic version of the female body.
“I’ve had my body manipulated so many different times for so many different reasons, whether it’s paparazzi photographers or for film posters,” Knightley told the Times of London. “And that was one of the ones where I said: ‘OK, I’m fine doing the topless shot so long as you don’t make them any bigger or retouch.’ Because it does feel important to say it really doesn’t matter what shape you are.”
The San Jose Mercury News reports that Knightley’s chest has been the subject of several headlines over the last decade. In 2004, for example, her chest was digitally increased for a “King Arthur” movie poster. In 2006, Knightly appeared naked on the cover of Vanity Fair with actress Scarlett Johansson and fashion designer Tom Ford, who was wearing clothes.
In her next movie role, Keira will join actor Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game.
