The Mentalist was renewed for another season, but Intelligence and Hostages did not survive the cuts.
CBS recently selected the shows that will run this upcoming season while cutting ties with others this past Saturday.
Most notable was The Mentalist which was renewed for a seventh season despite its struggles to maintain ratings in a competitive Sunday night slot. Creator Bruno Heller is hoping that the decisions to move the setting from Sacramento, CA to Austin, TX, and to kill off a mainstay character in Red John will pay dividends for the coming seasons, allowing for a new creative direction.
As for shows that will not be continuing with CBS, dramas Intelligence and Hostages along with comedies Bad Teacher, Friends with Better Lives, and The Crazy Ones have all been canceled. CBS was on the fence about The Crazy Ones, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Robin Williams, but the passing of Robin Williams combined with other circumstances made the show’s return unrealistic.
With these cuts out of the way, viewers have a much better idea of what CBS’ roster of shows will look like for 2014-2015 season. The full roster includes the spinoff NCIS: New Orleans, Michigan-based detective drama Battle Creek, Madam Secretary, psychological thriller Stalker, Scorpion, a re-imagined Odd Couple starring Matthew Perry, and The McCarthy’s.
Critics are not optimistic of CBS’ new lineup but have not passed judgement just yet. Many are excited to see what can be done with Garry Marshall’s classic The Odd Couple and look forward to seeing what CBS can bring to the table this season.
