Would you be willing to shell out several hundred bucks for a dirty-looking E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial video game for an Atari 2600?
According to Wired magazine, a group of Atari games that were dug up from a landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico in April are up for auction on eBay thanks to the Tularosa Basin Historical Society of Alamogordo. The magazine notes that approximately 100 games have been put up for auction, including a copy of the E.T. game that is currently sitting at $400.
The description from the eBay listing reads as follows:
“This game is one of the limited numbers recovered from the ‘Old Alamogordo Landfill,’ also known as the “Atari dump.’ Purchaser will receive the game as portrayed in the photo above, City property I.D. tag, the Certificate of Authenticity and a narrative with photos of the 1983 burial and the 2014 excavation proving the legend to be true. The seller does not represent that this item is operable; it was buried for 30 years. Sold as is.”
The Alamogordo News reports that this first group of 100 games is just the tip of the iceberg; More games may be listed if the sale of the first 100 is successful.
