The arrest comes just weeks before the release of the band's new album.
Just a few months shy of AC/DC’s 2015 world tour, long-time drummer for the band Phil Rudd was arrested on Thursday last week in New Zealand on charges of hiring a hitman to commit murder, threatening to kill, and possession of methamphetamine and marijuana. The 60-year-old Rudd, the only Australian-born member of the band, was arrested after police raided his home in Bureta, a suburb in New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty, according to a CNN report. On Thursday afternoon, Rudd appeared in Tauranga District Court and was released on bail under the condition that he would not have any contact with the man he allegedly hired as a hitman.
While the murder plot charges have since been dropped due to lack of evidence, the BBC reports, the charges of making threats to kill and possession of various drugs still remain. Greg Hollister-Jones said, the prosecuting lawyer on the case, stated that his office had reviewed the case there was “insufficient evidence to proceed with the charge of attempting to procure murder.” Rudd’s lawyer Paul Mabey said the murder plot charge should never have been made, adding that Rudd has suffered “incalculable” damage from the libelous publicity surrounding the allegation.
The family of Phil Rudd have broken their silence since Rudd’s arrest. Rudd’s son, Thomas Rudd, came to his father’s defense: “All I will say is that my dad is a good guy. He’s not perfect but wouldn’t harm anyone,” he told Daily Mail Australia.
AC/DC’s new album, “Rock or Bust,” is set to be released Dec. 2. It is unclear how Rudd’s recent legal troubles will affect the album’s reception and the band’s world tour.
