‘Mean Girls’ reunion brings cast back together after 10 years

'Mean Girls' cast discuss the film's fan-dubbed "holiday" and the roles they all originally auditioned for.

In the ten years since Mean Girls premiered, the high school comedy has become one of the most-quoted films of our generation. Entertainment Weekly brought Tina Fey, Lindsay Lohan, and the infamous Plastics together for their reunion issue, and the cast discussed the roles they all originally wanted to play in the film and their continued fascination with how popular Mean Girls still is so many years later.

A throwaway line in the film has Lindsay Lohan’s character telling her crush that “it’s October 3rd,” so every year on that date, millions of Mean Girls fans celebrate what they deem the official “Mean Girls Day” by quoting the hit film. The cast finally stated that they are now well-aware of the “holiday,” though it took until this year for Lohan to figure out what fans were talking about.

“I was leaving the playhouse the other day. These kids were outside, and someone said, “Do you know what day it is?” and someone said, “It’s October 3rd!” I was like, “What? I don’t understand!” I didn’t know what they meant. Then I realized it!”

Lacey Chabert, who plays Gretchen Wieners in the film, said that her new nephew’s birthday will help her always remember to celebrate “Mean Girls Day.”

“My new nephew was born on October 3rd,” said Chabert. “My brother came home from work and goes, “Everyone at work keeps going, ‘Oh, your baby is so lucky! Your baby is born on Mean Girls Day!’ ” He goes, “What is that? Can you explain that to me?””

One of the biggest surprises of the EW reunion was that, if the cast had their way, several of them would have played each others’ characters.

“I wanted to play Regina. I had just played—in Confessions and Freaky—not the cool girl in school. I was still 17 years old and I wanted to be the cool girl on set,” admitted Lohan. “So I had a war with him, and he goes, ‘No, Cady is the heroine, and that’s who you are.'”

Lohan revealed that Amanda Seyfried, who ended up being cast as airhead Plastic Karen Smith, auditioned for Regina before the part was given to Rachel McAdams. However, even McAdams wanted a different role when she went in to audition.

“Originally, I auditioned for Cady,’ revealed McAdams. “Everyone was flipped around a little bit.”
