Microsoft ports stand-alone Office apps to mobile devices.
For the longest time, users of Apple’s mobile platform on both iPhone and iPad have endured the use of subpar applications when it comes to the office — but no more, according to Microsoft.
“We’re taking that same user experience we provide online to the native apps of iOS and Android. We want to make sure that our customers can be productive across all the devices they have,” said Microsoft head of office marketing Michael Atalla.
The best part about this announcement? The applications will be free to consumers. Businesses will still have to pay for an Office 365 subscription to allow the applications to work with existing documents on OneDrive. The basic Office 365 subscription costs $9.99 per month.
Microsoft originally rolled out Office for mobile platforms as a combination suite that was minimal at best for performing functions that the desktop or web versions could do. Most ratings for this suite have been below the 2.5 mark. Popular competition for document editing has been Google Drive, which still does not allow for document editing in the iPhone app. The new stand-alone applications will allow both editing and creation of new documents and files.
“We’re continuing to help people use Office everywhere so they can do more and achieve more,” said Microsoft in a statement.
