Abducted Philly woman found in Maryland, suspect on suicide watch

The kidnapping suspect is Delven Barnes, 37, who is being held by authorities for an unrelated warrant from Virginia for attempted capital murder

22-year-old Carlesha Freeland-Gaither, who was violently abducted from the Germantown section of Philadelphia on Sunday, was reportedly found in Maryland alive and unharmed.  Her alleged kidnapper, 37-year-old Delvin Barnes, is set to appear in court on Wednesday where he will face charges of attempted murder, sexual assault, and kidnapping.

Barnes was put on suicide watch in the Riverside Regional in Virginia, following his arrest in Maryland on Thursday, reports ABC News.

After a three-day search, Barnes was found and arrested after police tracked his license plate to Jessup, Md. When the vehicle was discovered, both Barnes and Freeland-Gaither were present inside the car, and Barnes was arrested immediately. According to Tim Jones, a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives special supervisory agent, Freeland-Gaither was hysterical when she was found. Surveillance footage had recorded Freeland-Gaither’s kidnapping at around 9:40 p.m. Sunday evening. The dramatic video shows an unidentified man snatch Freeland-Gaither from the sidewalk and stuff her into a nearby vehicle on West Coulter Street.

On Sunday, the mother of the victim, Keisha Gaither, thanked authorities — especially lead investigator Detective Jim Sloan — for their work in apprehending her daughter’s kidnapper: “I just want to thank everybody. I would like to thank the Philadelphia department of police, the FBI…especially the public,” said Keisha Gaither at a Philadelphia press conference. “I’m taking my baby home.”
