Most space objects that enter the Earth's atmosphere burn up before they hit the ground.
Multiple fireballs were spotted over the U.S. Monday night, but one of them may have been part of an elaborate stunt, according to a report from Space.com. Three fireballs lit up U.S. skies — one over Arkansas, one over Chicago and one over West Virginia.
While the fireballs over Arkansas and West Virginia were likely real, the one spotted over Chicago was part of a stunt organized and pulled off by the Red Bull Air Force, MyCentralOregon.com reports.
Red Bull confirmed the stunt, which involved skydivers and flares, in a caption added to their YouTube video:
“On November 3rd, at approximately 6:25pm in Chicago, Illinois, locals reported a mysterious fireball falling from the Chicago skyline. What was this fireball, you ask? The beginning of an apocalypse? Maybe a meteor? Well, Jon Devore, Mike Swanson and Sean MacCormac from the Red Bull Air Force took an epic wingsuit flight in the darkness of night, blasting flares as they fell down from the sky before they landed.”
The video of the Chicago “fireball,” which was posted on November 3 by witness Steve Sobel, has been viewed by nearly 41,000 people.
