Mysterious ‘rapture cloud’ appears over Australia

Weird-looking cloud has a pretty boring explanation.

If there’s one thing that just about everyone loves, it’s gawking at the sky and freaking out over strange apparitions. Today, Wonthaggi, Australia was no different when a mysterious, glimmering, rainbow “cloud” appeared in the skies above. People, naturally, lost their minds on twitter, with some proclaiming it to be a sign of the endtimes.

Though not divine in nature, the phenomenon is still pretty neat. It’s a fallstreak hole, also known as a hole punch cloud, punch hole cloud, skypunch, canal cloud or cloud hole. It describes a circular cutout that seems to only appear in cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds. The shimmering rainbow effect is the result of water crystals in the cloud freezing, in turn refracting light the way a prism does. Those frozen crystals also sink lower than normal cloud particles, resulting in the “punched out” look of the cloud. The fallstreak hole can be triggered by several things, including nearby airplanes. The beautiful phenomenon can persist as long as there are high-altitude clouds in the area. Speaking of airplanes, the chemtrail crowd was out in force on twitter as well, wondering if the fallstreak hole wasn’t “proof” of them

They’re not – fallstreak holes just happen to get their rainbow effects the same way contrails do, via the freezing water vapor.
