Now, two high profile suspects are in the custody of federal authorities and a search for answers can begin. Iguala Mayor Jose Luis Abarca and his wife Maria de los Angeles Pineda were arrested on the morning of Nov. 4.
“The house they were found in looked as it were abandoned,” said Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam.
The couple, the wife of which was a major operator in a cartel offshoot of the Beltran Leyva Gang, were arrested in Mexico City. Parents and families of the missing students are seeking solace and answers on where the students are and whether they are still alive.
The search for these students has resulted in the uncovering of several mass graves in Mexico. The most recent of which reported on Oct. 28, 2014. As of yet, no remains have been identified.
The missing students were in attendance at a teachers college and were at odds with Abarca over demonstrations that had taken place. Clashes with police outside Iguala led to six people being shot and the others taken. Over 50 people have been taken into custody in relation to the missing students.
