'The Dark Knight' star drops out of Aaron Sorkin's Steve Jobs biopic "after much deliberation."
The Social Network screenwriter Aaron Sorkin made headlines last month for casting Christian Bale as Steve Jobs in his upcoming biopic without even asking the former Batman to audition. However, “after much deliberation and conflicting feelings,” Bales has determined that he is not a good fit for the role and has stepped down from the film.
Sorkin, the man behind box-office hits like Moneyball and The Social Network, announced in October that Bale was the only actor he was considering for the role of the Apple founder in his film based on Walter Isaacson’s “Steve Jobs” biography, which the late Jobs himself sanctioned before dying in 2011 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
“We needed the best actor on the board in a certain age range and that’s Chris Bale,” stated Sorkin when he officially announced the Dark Knight actor’s casting.
Sorkin said that the role of Jobs in his film will be extremely difficult, and thus requires a talented actor.
“He has more words to say in this movie than most people have in three movies combined. There isn’t a scene or a frame that he’s not in. So it’s an extremely difficult part.”
While Sorkin was certain that Bale would “crush” the role, the 40-year-old Oscar winner wasn’t so confident. Sources told the Hollywood Reporter that Bale carefully considered the role and script but has officially turned down the project because he didn’t feel like he was a fit to portray Jobs.
Leonardo DiCaprio was previously rumored for the role, but he reportedly pulled out of the film weeks before Bale’s casting was announced. The lukewarm critical response to Ashton Kutcher’s Jobs, another biopic which was released last year and centered on the life of the Apple founder, may have played a major factor in both award-winning actors being apprehensive about joining any Steve Jobs biopic film.
