Award-winning artist and her label request that Spotify remove all Taylor Swift songs from their music library.
On Sunday night, Taylor Swift’s latest hit single Shake It Off was Spotify’s most-played track. However, Shake It Off and all of Swift’s other songs were removed from the popular streaming service’s library early Monday morning, at the 24-year-old singer’s request.
Swift’s label, Big Machine Label Group, has always been apprehensive about allowing their artists’ music to be streamed on Spotify. They didn’t give the streaming service access to Swift’s 2012 album Red until 120 days after its release, and they kept the latest albums for Brantley Gilbert and Rascal Flatts’ away from the service for 60 days. Swift has also recently expressed her distaste for music streaming, and told the Wall Street Journal in June that “piracy, file sharing and streaming have shrunk the numbers of paid album sales drastically.”
With her latest album 1989 releasing nearly a week ago, Swift may soon become the first musician to have three albums sell a million copies in only one week, but that didn’t stop her from ending her relationship with Spotify. The streaming service is actively trying to persuade Swift to change her mind, and launched a social media campaign to remind her that 16 million of Spotify’s 40 million+ users had played her music in the past month.
“We were young when we first saw you but now there’s 40MM who say stay, stay, stay. It’s a love story baby #justsayyes,” Spotify tweeted early Monday morning.
Spotify also released a statement to remind artists that they pay nearly 70 percent of their revenue back to the music community.
“We hope she’ll change her mind and join us in building a new music economy that works for everyone. We believe fans should be able to listen to music wherever and whenever they want, and that artists have an absolute right to be paid for their work and protected from piracy.”
