Chris Rock’s terrorism jokes on SNL raising eyebrows

Chris Rock didn’t shy away from the controversial during his hosting appearance on Saturday Night Live this weekend, taking on the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings and the 9/11 attacks among other hot-button issues.

The comedian — who served briefly as a cast member on the show once — took on the sensitive topic of terrorismĀ during his monologue, where he noted that with Halloween past and the New York City marathon coming up, “what could go wrong there?”

The 2013 Boston Marathon bombings killed three people and wounded 264 more. The event is still fresh in the minds of Americans, but it didn’t stop Rock from riffing on the subject.

That led into comments about the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks in New York and the subsequent construction of the Freedom Tower, set to open later this year. Rock called the building the “Never Going in There Tower.”

He also predicted that America would eventually find a way to commercialize the tragedy. “We’re only five years away from 9/11 sales,” he joked. “That’s right. You’re gonna hear it on the radio. ‘Come on down to Red Lobster. These shrimp are nine dollars and 11 cents!'”

He also took on religion, noting that Christmas had become extremely commercialized despite Jesus’ reputation for being non-materialistic.

“Christmas is Jesus’ birthday,” he said. “I don’t know Jesus but from what I’ve read Jesus is the least materialistic person to ever roam the Earth! No bling on Jesus!”

That wasn’t the end of the bold subject material for Rock. Later in the show, he played a terrorist from the Islamic State pitching his organization to the reality show “Shark Tank,” where entrepreneurs attempt to talk investors into buying a stake in their businesses.
