Last known infected U.S. Ebola patient upgraded to ‘stable’ condition

Health officials are monitoring a number of cases around the country as they seek to contain the Ebola outbreak.

A New York doctor who came down with Ebola has been upgraded to stable condition on Saturday following more than a week of treatment.

Dr. Craig Spencer, 33, is the only person in the United States who has contracted in Ebola, and is currently in isolation after nine days of treatment. While still in serious condition, he has been upgraded to stable at New York City’s Bellevue Hospital, according to Reuters.

Spencer had just returned from Guinea in West Africa where he helped those who had the disease. So far, at least 5,000 have died from the disease in that part of the world.

He was diagnosed Oct. 23 after traveling on the New York subway, eating out, and going bowling, causing panic over whether he had spread the disease to others and causing health officials to issue protocols for those at risk of becoming infected.

Meanwhile, Texas nurse Nina Pham, 26, has recovered from Ebola. She contracted the disease after treating a Liberian patient at a hospital in Dallas. Her dog, Bentley, was quarantined as a precaution.

In Maine, a state judge refused a state request to forcibly quarantine nurse Kaci Hickox, who has ignored demands from state officials to stay under quarantine, arguing that Ebola fears amounted to hysteria as there was no evidence she had contracted the virus. Hickox had been in Sierra Leone treating Ebola patients, and tested negative for the virus on her return. Hickox said a forcible quarantine would violate her Constitutional rights, and the judge agreed.

A woman in Oregon who ame down with a fever has been hospitalized in an isolation unit after returning from West Africa, although she had not come into contact with Ebola patients.

Medical professionals have repeatedly stated to the public that Ebola is difficult to catch and can only be spread through the handling of bodily fluids from someone who is both infected and is showing symptoms of the disease.

Some nations have taken precautions a step beyond the United States, with Canada and Australia barring anyone from entering the coutnry who is a citizen of Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea.
