The girls were reportedly tossed more than 100 feet by the force of the impact.
Police say that three 13-year-old girls were killed Friday night by a speeding car in Santa Ana, California, CNN reports.
The Santa Ana Police Department says that the trick or treaters had the right of way at a crosswalk when a car smashed into them and zoomed off. Police are currently searching for two suspects.
According to The Associated Press, a black Honda with damage was discovered near the scene of the accident, but when authorities went to the home where the car was registered, the vehicle’s owners were no longer living there.
Police are hoping that the public can help them locate their suspects.
“It was Halloween. There were a lot of people out there,” Santa Ana police spokesman Anthony Bertagna told The AP.. “These guys fled this car. Did they call somebody to pick them up? Did they live in the neighborhood? Did they run into a house?”
The AP notes that investigators are combining through surveillance video and interviewing witnesses in an effort to find those responsible. The black Honda is also being examined for forensic evidence that may help investigators identify the two individuals.
The girls, including a set of twins, were reportedly tossed more than 100 feet by the force of the impact.
