Medicare releases 3,000 pages of new regulations on 2015 payments

The agency said the changes are meant to improve consumers' experience.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have laid down 3,000 pages of regulations that will set 2015 payment rates in the Medicare program, including those for physicians, according to a recent report by The Hill.

The regulations, which were released late Friday, cover rates for various providers in services under the program. The agency also dealt with a few initiatives that deal with end-stage renal diseas, ambulatory surgical centers, and hospital outpatientcare. Also, CMS changed a few features of the fee schedules for durable medical equipment that falls under Medicare.

In a statement, the CMS said the rules are part of a “broader strategy driving greater value in health care.”

The aim is to build on best practices in the health care systems to improve the quality of care while also driving down costs.

Another effort by CMS has been to create a new payment to support chronic care management, which would streamline payments for hospital care for individual patients, as well as to expand the Physician Compare website to help consumers be better informed.

The website would make group practices as well as individual physicians available for public reporting, and would take into account a patient’s experience.

On Thursday, the agency released rules on payments for home health agencies.
