Stephen Colbert's last episode of 'The Colbert Show' will air on December 18.
Stephen Cobert’s hit Comedy Central show The Colbert Report debuted in 2005 after his stint as a correspondent for The Daily Show, but the series will soon come to an end so the 50-year-old political satirist can take over for David Letterman on CBS’ Late Show next year. Comedy Central announced Friday that the final installment of the program will air on Dec. 18.
The December finale date means Colbert will still have plenty of time to discuss the election, and Deadline states that both The Colbert Report and The Daily Show will air live election episodes on Nov. 4. The Colbert Report episode will be titled “Midterms ‘014: Detour To Gridlock: An Exciting Thing That I Am Totally Interested In – Wait! Don’t Change The Channel. Look At This Video Of A Duckling Following A Cat Dressed Like A Shark Riding A Roomba! ‘014!” and include an appearance from The Daily Dish’s Andrew Sullivan, and The Daily Show‘s episode will be titled “Democalypse 2014: America Remembers It Forgot To Vote” and include an appearance by Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus.
Colbert’s debut as host for CBS’ Late Show is expected to air sometime in fall 2015, and Letterman said that he’s looking forward to seeing where Colbert takes the show.
“Stephen has always been a real friend to me. I’m very excited for him, and I’m flattered that CBS chose him. I also happen to know they wanted another guy with glasses.”
Colbert always presented himself as a right-wing political expert on The Colbert Report, but he will reportedly not be the same “character” on the Late Show.
“So we’ll all get to find out how much of him was me,” he joked. “I’m looking forward to it.”
Craig Ferguson, who hosts CBS’ Late Late Show will also be departing his program on Dec. 19, and will be replaced by James Corden. Corden’s debut as host will take place sometime next March.
