Freight train slams into SUV in Illinois, killing three family members

Three family members died when their SUV was hit by a freight train at a railroad crossing in Illinois, according to the Associated Press.

A woman, a boy, and a girl who were all related were in the SUV Thursday evening about 70 miles from St. Louis, minutes before a Halloween parade was supposed to start in the nearby city of Vandalia in Fayette County.

Details were limited on the crash, with policy saying that crossing warning signals appeared to be working properly and there was no word yet on what caused the crash.

Two people in the SUV were airlifted to a nearby hospital where there conditions remains unknown.

Ages and names of the victims were not yet available Friday morning, nor were the exact relationships specified.

The Halloween parade continued as planned despite the accident.

The three individuals were pronounced dead at the scene at 7:16 p.m. Police believe the car was between the crossing gates when the train struck the vehicle. The crossing had two sets of tracks.

The bodies were taken to St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effington, and an autopsy will be performed on them.
