Chelsea Handler abandons Instagram account after topless photo controversy

'Chelsea Lately' host leaves her account after Instagram continually deleted her topless photo.

Instagram drew criticism earlier this year for deleting images of breast cancer survivors and women breastfeeding, and the resulting “Free the Nipple” campaign against the Facebook-owned application has received support from celebrities like Scout Willis, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus and Cara DeLevingne. After her topless photos were taken down from her Instagram yesterday, Chelsea Handler joined the movement and abandoned her official account.
The Chelsea Lately host stated on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” last month that she doesn’t take her body seriously and loves being nude.

“I think it’s very empowering for me. I like to be naked because I don’t take my body seriously. I know people do and that’s nice for them. But I think bodies are so silly — you’re so vain in this business — myself included,” said Handler. “First of all, these [my breasts] are the best thing I have going on on my body so I like to take them out whenever I can and say, ‘Hey, look, pretend this is my whole face.'”

Handler posted a Vladimir Putin-parody picture of herself, naked on horseback, on her Instagram account Thursday, but the link to the image soon led to a “Page Not Found” error screen.

“Taking this down is sexist. I have every right to show I have a better body than Putin,” the 39-year-old comedian posted on Twitter, where she reposted the nude picture.

Instagram’s terms of service reveal that users “may not post violent, nude, partially nude, discriminatory, unlawful, infringing, hateful, pornographic or sexually suggestive photos or other content,” but despite agreeing to these terms when she made her account, Handler believes people should try to fight them.

“If a man posts a photo of his nipples, it’s ok, but not a woman? Are we in 1825?” wrote Handler after attempting to post the image on Instagram again. “If instagram takes this down again, you’re saying Vladimir Putin Has more 1st amendment rights than me. Talk to your bosses.”

When the photo was once again removed on Friday, she simply announced that she will no longer use her Instagram account, and wrote “You can now find my dogs and my breasts on Twitter only where my followers have the right to choose what they say. Bye bye instablock,” as the caption for her final post.
