Ford issues massive recall over concern about fuel leaks in Edge, Lincoln MKX models

The recall affects 204,448 vehicles.

Ford Motor Co. has issued a voluntary recall of 204,448 2007-08 model year Lincoln MKX luxury crossovers and Ford Edge crossovers due to concerns about fuel leaks that could create a risk of fires.

Ford said Wednesday it had knowledge of one fire that could be related to this leak, and while no injuries have been reported, the company decided to take a precautionary measure in declaring the recall, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Vehicle recalls have been an extremely vexing problem for United States manufacturers in particular this year. Automakers issue voluntary recalls to get ahead of the U.S. National Highway Traffic Administration.

The cause of the leak may be corrosion under the reinforcement brackets, which hold the fuel tank to the chassis. The problem has been seen at the Ford factory in Oakville, Ontario, Canada.

Almost all of the vehicles affected by the recall are within U.S. borders — some are in Canada — and Ford has asked owners to get their vehicles checked at a Ford deaership.

The Ford Edge is the third-best selling utility vehicle for the company at 86,051 unit sales in the first three quarters of 2014, although that figure is down 14 percent over the same period in 2013. Ford intends to put out a second version of the vehicle in the spring.

Meanwhile, the Lincoln MKX luxury crossover has solve 18,728 units, an 8 percent increase over last year. The vehicle was redesigned heavily for the 2016 model year. Ford has an eye on attacking the global luxury market.

The cars involved in the recall were located in the following states and territories: Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin, as well as New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island and Quebec in Canada.

The recall comes as automakers launch a regional campaign to replace air bag inflaters on vehicles in humid southeastern U.S. and Gulf Coast areas, as well as the Caribbean.
