Whishaw will voice the character after Colin Firth stepped aside.

English actor Ben Whishaw made his first voice debut as the Paddington Bear in a new trailer for the upcoming full-length feature film “Paddington.”

In the trailer, the bear — decked out in a red hat and duffel coat and wearing a label around his neck that says, “Please look after this bear. Thank you.” — arrives at Paddington train station after going from Peru to London trying to find a new home, according to the Daily Mail.

The 34-year-old Whishaw recently accepted the role after Colin Firth stepped aside.

Paddington is produced by David Heyman, who also produced visually acclaimed films like Harry Potter and Gravity. Paddington begins with the premise that an earthquake prompts his aunt Lucy to send him away from his native jungle in Peru.

The bear is animated, and animators had to wait for Whishaw to read his lines so it could animate his face for the trailer to match Whishaw’s speech.

Heyman, who is credited with discovering Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, has spent eight years working on getting the Paddington animation right, explaining that he has “a great fondness” for the Paddington Bear since he was a child. He said he owned one and kept it around him at all times until he grew older.

Heyman said that the Paddington Bear has “solid values and firm views” about right and wrong, and is a timeless character whose humor is intergenerational.

He said he was concerned about getting the right actor to do his voice, and decided first Firth and then Whishaw would be perfect for hte role. He described Firth’s decision to step aside as “mutual,” but did not elaborate.

The film will also include well-known film stars like Nicole Kidman, Julie Walters, Michael Gambon, Jim Broadbent, and Imelda Staunton.

The Paddington franchise has published 70 titles that have been translated into 30 languages. They have sold 30 million copies around the globe.
