The off-duty officer turned over the money to Concord police.
An off-duty California Highway Patrol officer discovered $120,000 in cash in two bank deposit bags sitting in the middle of the street in Concord, California, on Monday, the SFGate reports.
“I opened [one of the bags] enough just to see that it was $100 bills,” the unnamed officer told KGO-TV.
The officer, who has reportedly been with the agency for 20 years, turned over the money to Concord police. A quick investigation identified the rightful owner and the money was returned.
“I am happy to hear the rightful owner was identified and that the money has been returned,” the officer said in a statement obtained by The Associated Press.
The rightful owner was a man, according to ABC News, who had reported losing his life savings around the time the money went missing.
The officer told ABC News that she plans on using her experience to teach her kids a lesson: It’s always important to do the right thing.
News of the officer’s good deed could not have come at a better time for the CHP, as the agency has been besieged by a nude-photo sharing scandal that has eroded the region’s trust in law enforcement officers.
