Melissa Rivers has contacted a NYC law firm in hopes of determining the facts behind her mother's death last month.
Legendary comedian and Fashion Police host Joan Rivers died at the age of 81 on Sept. 4 after experiencing cardiac arrest during a medical procedure on her throat, and her family is reportedly considering filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the treatment facility where Rivers experienced her fatal “therapeutic complication.” A New York City law firm stated Wednesday that Melissa Rivers, Joan’s daughter, has hired them to look into her mother’s death.
“In order to fully determine the facts and circumstances surrounding the death of Joan Rivers, we confirm that our firm has been engaged by Melissa Rivers and her family,” revealed Ben Rubinowitz, a partner at Gair, Gair, Conason, Steigman, Mackauf, Bloom and Rubinowitz.
The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner stated earlier this month that Rivers died from “anoxic encephalopathy due to hypoxic arrest during laryngoscopy and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with propofol sedation for evaluation of voice changes and gastroesophageal reflux disease.” The comedian experienced fatal brain damage due to low blood oxygen during her throat procedure at the Yorkville Endoscopy on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, and while this is a known risk of the procedure, sources say Melissa Rivers is suspicious of the treatment facility’s medical decisions and hopes that a lawsuit may help change policy on how private clinics function and get regulated on a “federal level.”
“This shouldn’t have happened,” a source told E! News. “It was a completely treatable and avoidable complication.”
“It’s not about the money. For Melissa, this is about getting an answer about why this happened and making sure it never happens again. The only way to get these answers is to file a lawsuit. Melissa wants answers—not money.”
