According to a report from WFMY News 2, compensation checks to victims of North Carolina’s past eugenics program are in the process of being mailed.
North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory signed a budget bill Monday that authorized the state to divide $10 million equally among qualified recipients.
“Today is a day of reconciliation and healing,” Governor McCrory said in a statement released by his office.“Signing the legislation to make these payments possible was among the most gratifying actions I have taken as governor. While no amount of money could undo the wrong that was done to these victims, I hope these payments bring some solace in their acknowledgment that the actions of the Eugenics Board were wrong. This is a new day for us all and brings us nearer to closing one of North Carolina’s darkest chapters.”
WFDD reports that approximately 7,600 people were sterilized in the Tar Heel State over nearly five decades as part of a eugenics program that reviewers say unfairly focused on lower-income and minority women. WFDD adds that by the end of last month, only 30 percent of the 731 claims submitted had been given the green light.
