CBS is pitching only one new comedy show, "The McCarthys."
CBS has renewed all four of its dramas for a full season, according to the New York Times.
CBS has shown a lot of strength in producing crime dramas, and has developed a reputation as a network that can develop good new dramas, although they resembles ones that CBS already airs. For example, “NCIS: New Orleans” is the second spinoff CBS has produced for its well-established hit “NCIS.”
Also renewed was “Scorpion,” which is about geniuses solving crimes and has revived Monday night ratings for the network.
A slightly different drama is “Madam Secretary,” which follows the U.S. secretary of state as she deals with international crises. The drama has performed well in its Sunday slot.
The fourth and final drama is “Stalker,” which has drawn some criticism for its subject matter, but has performed well in the ratings and thus garnered an order for more episodes from its parent company.
In the comedy department, CBS is pitching only one new show this season, “The McCarthys,” which will run on Thursdays. The show focuses on an Irish-Catholic family with a fanatical devotion to sports and shares a three-decker house in Boston, with one member trying to strike out on his own.
All of the new dramas, except Stalker, rank in the top 15 prime time programs.
CBS is also banking on continued success of its NFL Thursday Night Football to help it continue to to help it beat out other networks in the ratings war.
