He sought to back Democrats at risk in upcoming elections.
Vice President Joe Biden stoped in Iowa Monday to endorse Senate candidate Bruce Braley, blasting Republicans and hinting at a possible 2016 presidential bid, according to the Des Moines Reigster.
Speaking to the crowd of Iowans in Davenport, he said that the first first thing that came to his mind when looking at the field is “put me in coach, I’m ready to play.”
U.S. Rep. Bruce Baley, the Democratic candidate for Senate who is slightly behind in the polls, and incumbent congressman Rep. Dave Loebsack, seeking reelection, shared double-billing with Biden at the event, held at Modern Woodmen Park.
Braley praised Biden in remarks, saying he knows Iowa well and Iowans love him back. Biden said in his 22-minute speech that if Braley wins, the Democrats may keep the Senate, which would “break the back” of the hard right.
Biden warned that a loss of the Senate could push progress of Democrats back six to eight years — around the time the George W. Bush Administration ended and Barack Obama secured the White ouse.
Braley is dealing with an aggressive challenge from Republican Joni Ernst for the seat of retiring Democrat Tom Harkin.
Ernst has just a three-point lead over Braley for the seat, leading 49 to 46 percentage points in a recent poll. NBC polling has found that the GOP has a lot of momentum in the most competitive races and has a solid chance to take the Senate.
It will be only a week until voters will go to the polls, resulting in a fervent push by both Republicans and Democrats to get out the vote.
Biden has been weighing his own presidential bid in 2016, although Hillary Rodham Clinton is perceived as the clear frontrunner for Democrats. Clinton was defeneated by Barack Obama in 2008 for the party nomination in the bid to replace George W. Bush as president.
